BAYONNE, NJ - Two people are dead after a fire swept through an Island View Court apartment building in the early hours of Friday.
According to a statement by Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver, members of the Bayonne Fire Department responded to the scene at approximately 1:52 a.m. and immediately began to use two hose lines inside the structure to fight back the flames.
As the fire continued to grow firefighters used exterior streams on the blaze.
Two victims were transported to Bayonne Medical Center where they were pronounced dead. A third victim was also removed from the building but refused further medical treatment.
While the fire was brought under control at approximately 4;31 a.m. firefighters remained on the scene through the morning to extinguish hot spots or flare up, the statement read.
Fifty four apartments in the building complex were temporarily evacuated, with 32 people from 18 apartments displaced until repairs can be completed on the building.
The Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross are offering support to these residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
