BAYONNE, NJ -- The Bayonne ice hockey team will open its 2019-2020 season Wednesday ay home against Paramus Catholic at 3:30 p.m. at the Richard Korpi Ice Rink.
The Bees, who were 7-13-1 last season, not only have an abundance of new players, but they'll also be guided by a new man behind the bench, first-year coach Steve Plancey, a Special Education teacher at Bayonne High School.
Bayonne will have just three seniors on the roster. Senior forward Chris Moreton played a lot last year, but will be counted on to pick up more of the scoring and special teams responsibilities this season. Braden Dunlap is another returning forward.
Junior Billy Mauer and sophomore Zachary Taylor will be two of the top defensemen on the team. Sophomore Anthony O'Brien and Michael Moncion are new forwards Plancey hopes can make an impact.
Shawn Agosto has been entrusted with the primary responsibilities between the pipes as the Bees' starting goalie.
"We are very young this year, having graduated 15 seniors," Plancey said. "This season, we only have three. It's a great group of kids that are very hard-working. Our pre-season games, we went 1-1. Our advantage will be our speed and strong defense."
Plancey previously coached at Point Pleasant Boro, which this year has entered into a co-op with another program, leaving Plancey a free agent who has landed in a new home as Bayonne's head coach.
Following opening day Bayonne will host Nutley on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
