BELMAR, NJ — As Beach Haus Brewery and Beach Music Studios are proving, a beer collaboration can be much more than the brew itself.
Tune Up — a signature beer created at the landmark Belmar brewery in partnership with Beach Music Studios owner Danny White — is hitting all the right notes not only in terms of taste, but in supporting a worthy cause.
For every pint poured of the swash witbier made with white peach purée, Beach Haus is donating $1 to benefit the BMS annual scholarship fund, and for every case sold, it will make a $12 donation.
“We are thrilled to support our neighbor and friend, Danny White, and his music scholarship fund,” said Steve Tichenor, taproom and events manager at the landmark brewery. “Danny came to us with the idea, and it just took off from there.”
The fundraising effort was recently announced by Tichenor at Beach Music Studio’s 15th Annual Holiday Party at The Stone Pony, where this year’s scholarship winner — Belmar Elementary School seventh-grader Kimberly Gonzalez — was awarded one year of private voice lessons.
“What is important about this collaboration is that it will help area children further their musical education,” White said. “Beach Haus Brewery is always ready to assist the community, and I appreciate their support of Beach Music and the scholarship program by producing a signature beer. They are a great group of individuals, and I am happy to call them friends.”
As for the beer itself, Tune Up is conditioned on an abundance of white peach to mellow the coriander and bring out a subtle sweetness, according to Beach Haus lead brewer Matt Pipkin.
“Danny wanted a beer with a lower alcohol content, a little sweeter and approachable by all,” Pipkin said. “We decided on a peach witbier with the white peach taking the balance of the witbier and bringing it just a little bit to the sweet side, while still being subtle.”
White said he wanted a beer that every beer drinker could enjoy—a “go-to” pint with something special. “I believe that Matt absolutely nailed it. It sits comfortably alongside the finest brews,” he said.
As for the beer’s name and logo design that features a guitar headstock, White came up with both. “As a guitar player, I thought if a musician/guitar player saw a guitar headstock tap in a pub, they would automatically want to try that beer,” he explained. “The name had to do with music, as well as getting ready to go on an adventure — for example, let’s tune up.”
For White, the effort has been all about the kids. “I can’t think of anything better than sitting back or going out with your friends and enjoying a top-shelf beer, while supporting local kids — most likely kids you know — and their love of music,” he said. “I am also proud to have the Beach Music name alongside the Beach Haus logo.”
