BELMAR, NJ — Belmar Arts Center is raffling off a slice of Belmar’s history — a portion of the iconic Freedman’s Bakery outdoor sign.

When the bakery’s flagship building at Main Street and Seventh Avenue closed its doors in 2014, arts center volunteers offered to take the red-and-white “Freedman’s” part of the exterior sign when it was being dismantled.

“It was going to be thrown away, so we offered to take the sign since it is such a part of Belmar history,” said BAC administrator Diane Cioffi-Meier.

But the large metal sign, which adorned the bakery building for many of its 64 years in Belmar, sat in disrepair outside the center for several years. Not until recently did the idea come up to hold a drawing — with the vintage signage as the prize — with all proceeds to benefit the arts in Belmar.

With the approval of the BAC board, the fundraising project was off and running.

After being repaired and preserved by BAC volunteers Dorsey and Rich Lucas, the 12-by-3-foot sign will soon have a new home. The raffle drawing announcing the prize winner will be held on Saturday, September 15 at the arts center, located at 608 River Road, near the railroad tracks at Seventh Avenue.

Tickets are one for $5, three for $10 and seven for $20 and can be purchased at the center from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and during special events.

Proceeds will specifically support art openings and other creative events at the arts center, whose core mission is to bring people together to discover, learn and celebrate the arts.
