At Least One Lane Will Remain Open to Traffic from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. on July 20 and July 21
BELMAR, NJ — Belmar’s Main Street/Route 71 bridge will undergo priority repairs tonight and tomorrow night, July 20 and July 21, requiring overnight lane closures from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.
During the work, one lane will remain open on the movable bridge, which spans the Shark River, connecting Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea.
Contractor IEW Construction Inc., is scheduled to close the left lane of Route 71/Main Street southbound and shift the Route 71/Main Street northbound lane to the right shoulder on the bridge, DOT said in a traffic advisory.
For boat traffic, the drawbridge will only be opened once per night between midnight and 12:30 a.m. The span is a bascule bridge with a vertical clearance in the closed-to-navigation position of approximately 8 feet above mean high water, DOT said.
Vessels able to transit through the bridge in the closed position may do so at any time. For more information about the bridge openings, visit the U.S. Coast Guard District 5 Local Notice to Mariners.
The Hamilton-based firm will be performing structural steel and concrete repairs to the 88-year-old span, which last underwent repairs in the spring of 2019.
Construction signs will be posted alerting motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
