BELMAR, NJ — Main Street Donuts has been chosen as the best doughnut shop in Monmouth County by Monmouth Health & Life magazine.
The specialty shop garnered a 2018 Readers’ Choice Award in the “Best Donuts” category in its annual "Best of Monmouth" guide, which was published in the magazine's September issue.
MSD has been delighting customers with delectable, handcrafted doughnuts since opening at 705 Main Street only seven months ago — making the annual honor even sweeter for owners Joe Rizzuto and Paula Giunta.
“We are extremely proud to be voted the top doughnut shop by our customers, especially being a relatively newcomer to the doughnut scene,” said Rizzuto, a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America who possesses the flair for being on the cutting edge of emerging food trends.
“We thank all of our customers for their ongoing patronage and for embracing us from day one. We look forward to being part of this community for years to come,” added Giunta.
Her background in catering and event planning has complemented Rizzuto culinary skills in finding the recipe for doughnut-making success. And for them, that begins with every made-to-order doughnut.
At their quaint shop, customers select their vanilla, chocolate or even gluten-free doughnuts and then choose from the full assortment of glazes and toppings to make the deep-fried sweet treat their own. They can keep it simple with a drizzle of icing or a sprinkle of powdered sugar or go for it all with a confection that defies decadence.
There also is a wide selection of tempting blackboard specials, such as Crunchy Monkey, Smore Than Your Need, Margarita Madness and the Belmar Bomb, as well as one or two specials of the day.
This summer, MSD introduced the donut ice cream sandwich, made from a vanilla doughnut with vanilla ice cream and chocolate chips, drizzled in chocolate sauce and covered with sprinkles.
For special occasions, customers can choose from simple doughnut bouquets or the more extravagant “Do-Cake,” which is a sight to behold and a sweet lover’s dream.
“We never stop looking to create something new — whether it’s a new doughnut special with a blend of seasonal toppings or a new concept for serving up our doughnuts,” Rizzuto said.
Added Guinta, “And we are always up for challenges from our customers. That’s what makes it special for us every day.”
