When it comes to a vibrant oceanfront that is second to none, Belmar is that good.

BELMAR, NJ — Stretching more than one mile along 21 blocks, nothing compares to Belmar’s beachfront when summer rolls into this popular Jersey Shore town.

Belmar is a perennial favorite among day-trippers, vacationers and seasonal visitors — all looking for lots of fun in the sun, plenty of places to relax and even a quiet moment along the boardwalk when the sun kisses the ocean on a cool morning.

“In addition to panoramic ocean views and a wide boardwalk for strolling and jogging, the Belmar beachfront offers a variety of dining and shopping options for visitors and residents alike,” says Belmar Business Partnership Trustee Christine Cardellino, who publishes the award-winning Belmar Beachcomber blog to promote tourism and commerce in the borough. “Along Ocean Avenue, you will find fine-dining and casual restaurants, boutiques, gift shops and more. Our beachfront merchants offer a little bit of something for everyone.”

On any given day, Belmar’s oceanfront sizzles with a bounty of dining choices — whether it’s a bacon egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast, a slice of pizza for lunch or a full-course meal with a crisp and cool cocktail for dinner. And don’t forget to cap the day with a fruit-filled bowl, iced coffee drink or ice cream served up simply or heaped with toppings galore.

During a stroll along the boardwalk, visit the myriad stores and shops that boast a full array of summer selections, including custom-printed shirts and hats, beachwear, toys and towels, as well as jewelry, hand-crafted items and other finds inspired by the sun and surf.

But the fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down. While several establishments offer entertainment and full dining into the evening hours, many fast-food eateries remain open into the wee hours of the morning, particularly on weekends and holidays.

Belmar Beach: The Go-To Destination along the Jersey Shore

Belmar offers amenities along its beachfront that are not found in most Jersey Shore communities, including:

  • Four free playgrounds situated on the sand near the boardwalk at Fourth, Eighth, 12th and 16th avenues.
  • Beach entrances equipped with Mobi-Mats that provided easier beach access for persons in wheelchairs, walkers and with those mobility limitations, as well as for strollers and wagons.
  • Stations for cell phone charging, water bottle filling and of course, bicycle racks.
  • Taylor Pavilion at Fifth Avenue, the centralized location for the beach office and a popular venue for summertime events.

For the fourth consecutive year, beach badge prices have remained unchanged. Seasonal badges are priced at $55 and $15 for persons age 62 and older and those with disabilities. Daily beach badges are $8 for individuals age 16 and older. They can be purchased at Taylor Pavilion’s beach office, located on the south side of 500 Ocean Avenue.

Belmar is once again offering free beach access to active-duty military members and military veterans and their family, as well as individuals in law enforcement and first-responders with proper identification upon entry.

Badges must be displayed on all Belmar beaches from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day through Labor Day, September 3.

Need a beach chair or two, or umbrella? “Upgrade your shade” with Belmar Sand + Sky Beach Supply. With locations at the entrances of the Fourth, Eighth, 12th and 16th Avenue beaches, rentals are available seven days a week.

For Your Safety on the Beach

Belmar’s beaches are protected by a corps of highly trained lifeguards, credited with responding to hundreds of surf calls each summer. While the beach never closes, lifeguards are on duty from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

The Rowland Pavilion at 10th Avenue serves as a public safety building, featuring a tower that will allow visual access of the entire beachfront for first responders. In addition to serving as headquarters of its lifeguards, the building is a substation for police, first aid and water rescue personnel.

July’s Calendar of Beachfront Events

The beachfront heats up with numerous special events for the entire family in July.

Belmar’s “Movies on the Beach” series runs for eight consecutive Saturday, beginning on July 14 at dusk. Bring a chair or blanket, and buy some popcorn and refreshments to support local organizations. Click here for the full schedule.

"Songwriters on the Beach" is a free summer concert series that features live musical performances every Thursday for eight weeks, beginning on July 12. The music begins at 7 p.m. on the beach between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

Fireworks will burst over the beach at dusk on Friday, July 13 — immediately following the kids races that are traditionally held on the eve of the Belmar Five Mile Run on Saturday, July 14. For information on the Belmar Five, click here.

With shovels, buckets and other assorted “tools” in hand, thousands of participants are expected for 32nd Annual New Jersey Sandcastle Contest on Wednesday, July 18.

Contestants and spectators alike will converge on the 18th Avenue beach for the free competition, which starts at 8 a.m. with judging beginning at noon. Award-winning designs will be selected based on creativity, resourcefulness, originality and types of accessories used. For more information, click here.

Looking Up in October for Belmar’s Kite Festival

All eyes will be turned to the skies on Sunday, October 14 for fifth annual Belmar Kite Festival. The high-flying spectacle, which features hundreds of kites — all in different shapes and sizes, colors and dimensions flying above the Third Avenue beach — is sponsored by the Belmar Business Partnership.
