BELMAR, NJ — Dollar General plans to open in the closed Family Dollar store in Belmar Plaza by late 2017.
After renovations are completed, the store will offer a “fresh new layout, complete with expanded offerings — all designed to make shopping easier to customers,” said Crystal Ghassemi with Corporate Communications at Dollar General Corp. in an email, adding that it will employ between six and 10 workers.
Family Dollar closed in early June, laying off five employees, shortly after Dollar General received Federal Trade Commission approval to purchase the assets of 323 former Family Dollar stores from Dollar Express, LLC. The opening of the new Dollar General store in Belmar is part of that asset acquisition from Dollar Express, although the terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Since Belmar does not have a supermarket, Family Dollar had become a convenient shopping destination for groceries and other staples, particularly for seniors who may not have the means to travel to a food store in a neighboring community.
Dollar General sells a variety of items, including health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items, basic clothing, packaged foods, refrigerated foods and frozen foods.
With 13,601 stores in 44 states, Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General is among the largest discount retailers in the United States. In Monmouth County, it has stores in Eatontown, Neptune City, Ocean and West Long Branch.
