Friends of Belmar Harbor: Seeking Junior Sailors and Campers for Summer Programs

BELMAR, NJ — Children can learn how to sail or discover the wonders of the Shark River during two programs to be held weekly this summer by Friends of the Belmar Harbor.

Registration now is open for FOBH’s Junior Sailing and Discovery Camp programs, which will be held from June 18 through August 30 as weekly offerings.

Open to youngsters age 8 to 15, the Junior Sailing Program offers both introductory and advanced courses, matching students of similar experience in a boat that is appropriate to them in terms of physical size, strength and ability.

The curriculum, led by certified instructors, focuses on safety, fun and learning, adhering to U.S. Sailing Association standards.

The Shark River Discovery Camp gives youngsters age 7 to 11 the opportunity to explore the sport of sailing, without the pressure of an instructional program. Camp activities may include kayaking, eco-arts and crafts, Menger Cat sailing, learning to understand tides and currents, a beach clean-up, starfish hunting, swimming and more.

Weekly sessions of both the Junior Sailing Program and Shark River Discovery Camp are held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For the Junior Sailing Program, the cost is regularly $325, but $275 if registering by April 1. For the Shark River camp, cost is regularly $275, but $225 if registering by April 1. Visit www.fobhnj.org to register for either program.

About Friends of the Belmar Harbor

The Friends of the Belmar Harbor (FOBH) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit educational organization that promotes the health and vitality of the Shark River Bay.

Since its founding in 1999, more than 6,000 youngsters and hundreds of adults and families have enjoyed FOBH adventures in competitive and recreational sailing, kayaking, ecosystem tours, shoreline cleanups and related activities.

FOBH offers the oldest youth sailing instruction program in Monmouth and Ocean Counties,  open to young people without condition or restriction, serving youth whose families are not members of private yacht clubs.

Over its history, FOBH has been supported by dedicated volunteers, donations from generous individuals, and grants from the N.J. Department of Transportation Office of Maritime Resources, N.J. Green Acres Program, corporations and foundations.
