Judge Denies Change of Venue for Seaside Park Bombing Suspect

ELIZABETH, NJ — Superior Court Judge Karen Cassidy has denied a change of venue for terror suspect Ahmad Khan Rahimi of Elizabeth. No trial date has been set.

Rahimi is charged with one count of unlawful possession of handgun, one count of possession of a firearm to be used unlawfully against a police officer, and four counts of attempted murder of several police officers.

In addition, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey both have filed federal criminal charges against Rahimi for allegedly conducting and attempting to conduct bombings in Seaside Park, Elizabeth and New York City on the two days immediately prior to his September 19 arrest.

Rahimi is suspected of planting a pipe bomb September 17, 2016, that exploded in Seaside Park . Later that day, a homemade pressure cooker bomb went off in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. A second pressure cooker bomb was discovered four blocks away. Late on September 18, multiple bombs were discovered at the train station in Elizabeth.

On September 19, Rahimi was captured, following a shootout with police in Linden.
