BELMAR, NJ — Cupcakes and candy, dress-up and make-up, rings and beads … and “real-live” mermaids — their satin-scaled fins glistening in the daylight. It was a little girls’ delight at JB Couture Cupcakes, which hosted its first-ever Mermaid Day.

With two mermaids perched on a table outside the storefront, the event brought a splash of color to brighten an otherwise dreary Saturday afternoon along Main Street on August 12. They greeted young wanna-be mermaids who waited anxiously to get their jewels and other gifts from the sirens of the sea.

Once inside, more than 30 girls were treated to “mer-makeovers,” complete with stations for hair styling, face-painting and selecting assorted accessories, before it was time to party like mermaids. And that meant enjoying the festive treats and cupcakes by JB Couture Cupcakes owner Jessica Bucceri.

“I first had a Unicorn Day and wanted to do something different, but something mythical,” she said. “So I decided on Mermaid Day. Everyone loves mermaids, especially little girls.”

Buccieri, who competed in the Food Network’s “Cake Wars,” is known for her creative flair — not only in the kitchen, but by staging private parties and events for the community such as these. Her Cupcake Camp is being held this summer for youngsters age 5 through 13 who learn how to flavor, cool and decorate cupcakes, as well as make candy and fondant. Each week of the five-week camp is designed for a different age group.

And Buccieri already is preparing for her next event: a Carnival Party, to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 25.
