FREEHOLD, NJ — September 27 is the last Wednesday that Monmouth County is offering free passport photos — the observance of National Passport Awareness Month.

The offer, which represents a $10 savings, applies to persons who visit the county clerk’s passport offices in Freehold and Neptune to complete the process on the same day.

“You never know when you may have to travel on short notice, so it’s important to be ready and apply for a passport if you do not have one,” said Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon.

“Residents who already have U.S. passports should check the expiration date and start the renewal process about two months ahead of time,” she added. “It is also important to check the passport’s expiration date because many countries require six months validity on a U.S. passport.”

To obtain a passport, it is necessary to have proof of American citizenship, your Social Security number, current identification, such as a driver's license or government identification, and the 2-by-2-inch passport photo, which will be taken at the passport office at no charge.

Parents who are making a passport application for a child under age 16 are required to appear together or submit additional documentation.

Here are the locations and hours of the county’s passport offices:

  • Freehold – Monmouth County Clerk’s Office, Market Yard (south of Main Street). Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Neptune – Monmouth County Connection, 3544 Route 66 (near Home Depot). Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to nooon

Hanlon recommends that residents seeking a passport should contact the passport office prior to their visit to verify what documentation will be needed and payment amount.

Information about the specific documentation can be found on the county clerk's website or by calling the passport office in Freehold at 732-431-7324 or County Connection’s passport office at 732-303-2828.
