LAKE COMO, NJ — The New York City firefighter charged with criminal mischief and defiant trespass for vomiting and defecating in an 18th Avenue backyard in June was fined $4,000 after pleading guilty to violating Lake Como's noise and littering ordinances.
When Joseph Cassano appeared in Belmar Municipal Court on July 10, he also gave the homeowners a $1,256 check for property damage after leaving a mess on their outdoor patio and patio furniture on June 10. At about 6:30 a.m. on that day, Cassano was arrested after he was found asleep in their garage, wearing soiled underwear and appearing confused, according to the police report.
Police said he could not remember any details leading him to this location, which is situated in walking distance of several bars frequented by summer visitors to this seashore town.
Cassano, 28, is a probationary firefighter with the New York Fire Department in Staten Island and son of former New York Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano. He recently returned to work after a 30-day suspension was ordered after the incident, according to reports.
