FREEHOLD, NJ — A 26-year-old Point Pleasant Beach man has been identified by investigators as the victim who died in a Brielle car crash on September 25 involving a Belmar physician.
Alejandro Garciamerino died at 12:56 a.m. shortly after being struck by a motor vehicle driven by James S. McCaughan, M.D., according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
McCaughan, 57, has been charged with third-degree causing death while driving with a revoked or suspended license, as well as with two other unspecified motor vehicle violations. He was released pending trial, the prosecutor’s office said.
Garciamerino was walking in the northbound lane of Route 71, near Bradley Avenue, when he was struck by the 2018 Nissan Versa operated by McCaughan, who is listed on the RJWBarnabas Health website as being a thoracic surgeon at Community Medical Center, Toms River.
The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART) and Brielle Police Department.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by federal and state law.
