BELMAR, NJ — For Sportsnut Cards & Collectibles owner Ted Henschel, time is certainly on his side.
Now located at 1102 Main Street in Belmar, his store boasts one of the largest selections of quality cards and collectibles in New Jersey — timeless treasures that feature athletes whose achievements span the decades in a full spectrum of sports.
In fact, Henschel is highly regarded in the field of sports cards for carrying rare and unique modern cards and vintage star cards, as well as autographed and rookie cards of players past and present.
Sportsnut’s high-quality line of merchandise attracts sports collectors and fans at every level — whether they’re just getting started in the hobby, looking for that special piece of memorabilia from their favorite athlete or trying to locate just the right item for an extensive collection.
“We have something for everyone — the most-sophisticated collector to the young sports fan,” Henschel said, who has been a collector himself since high school. “If you’re looking for a holiday gift, we have a full selection of signed memorabilia from all of the top stars.”
In addition to glass-enclosed cases of single cards, there also are shelves filled with card boxes and sets, and displays of autographed memorabilia — from footballs and helmets, baseball bats and balls, as well as jerseys and framed artwork, among much more.
Tucked among the expansive array of single cards that vary in cost, Henschel even has a small box of cards for the taking with a limit of three per customer per week, and a “specials” basket with packs priced at 50 cents each.
"What makes us unique is that we are always buying and selling all types of sports collectibles,” said Henschel. “We encourage anyone with something to sell to stop by and we’ll be happy to take a look at it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a single card, signed item or even a full collection. We are always looking for items to add to our inventory.”
Sportsnut recently celebrated its grand reopening at 1102 Main Street — situated a block from its former location of 11 years at 1210 Main Street, where a fire in October forced the shop to find a new home.
Although the fire caused substantial smoke and water damage to a portion of his merchandise, Henschel was not going down to defeat — just like the star athletes who adorn his merchandise.
Assessing his loss from the fire, he quickly located another storefront, and began the tedious task of moving thousands, upon thousands of items down the road. And in less than six weeks, he was back in the game — with the reopening of his new and expanded store.
And as Henschel continues to unpack and rearrange his unique merchandise with the arrival of more permanent shelves and display cases, there will always be something new to admire when visiting his shop — where sports stars, dreams and milestones live on.
