STAFFORD — In the largest upset in the 13-year history of the boys lacrosse Shore Conference Tournament, St. Rose shocked the third-seeded Southern Regional Rams with an 8-7 victory.
It also was the biggest win in the program's history for the 14-seeded Purple Roses.
Senior Chris Bormida scored four goals and goalie Robbie Brugnoli had 25 saves against Southern's high-scoring offense, in the game hosted by Southern Regional. Griffin McDermott added a hat trick and Shane Reilly scored once. St. Rose will take on sixth-seeded St. John Vianney in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 9.
Southern had a 10-game winning streak coming into the contest and had reached the SCT semifinals in four consecutive seasons, including winning the SCT title in 2015 and reaching the final in 2013 and 2014.
Kyle Mulrane led Southern with three goals and two assists and senior goalie Tristan Farina made eight saves. Will Johnson, Nick Fontana and Ryan McWhorter each had one goal and one assist. Dylan Smith scored once.
