BELMAR, NJ — Most came on leashes, several in strollers — and the smallest ones cradled in their owners’ arms. Pets and their families assembled in front of St. Rose R.C. Church on a chilly Saturday morning for the annual Blessing of Animals.
Rev. Christopher Dayton officiated over the October 5 gathering, blessing the animals one by one as they were gathered on the sidewalk outside the church at 603 Seventh Avenue.
The annual tradition is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the Feast of St. Francis Assisi, the patron saint of animals, who is remembered for his love of all creatures.
