BELMAR, NJ — Belmar is adding another treat to its Halloween bag of fun for children on Sunday, October 27.
Following the traditional Halloween parade and costume contest, a trunk or treat will be held in the parking lot of Belmar Plaza, featuring fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and public works equipment, as well as decorated vehicles from a host of community organizations and families from Belmar and Lake Como who have signed up to participate.
Open to children from Belmar and Lake Como, the festivities kick off at noon with the Halloween parade, which will start at the Belmar Municipal Building, 601 Main Street, and proceed down Main Street to Pyanoe Plaza, where the costume contest will take place.
Youngsters will be judged in five categories: funniest, scariest, most-original, best looking and best overall. Top winners will be chosen in four age groups — from pre-school to eighth grade — and for overall group of three or more people.
Prizes are being sponsored by the Belmar-based Order of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore.
During the event, the Beach Music Rock Band from Belmar-based Beach Music Studios will perform in Pyanoe Plaza, which is adjacent to Belmar Plaza — the location of the trunk or treat.
Registration for the costume contest will begin at 11 a.m. sharp in the municipal gym, 601 Main Street. If it rains, the parade and trunk or treat will be canceled, with the remaining activities to be held in the gym.
The event is sponsored by the Belmar Recreation Department, which is looking for volunteers to help along the parade route. For more information or to sign up, call Barry Trogu, recreation director, at 732-681-3700, ext. 211.
