LAKE COMO, NJ — Nicholas DeMauro has joined the Lake Como Council, replacing John Carvelli who resigned last month after moving out of the borough.

DeMauro, who has served on the Planning Board for two years, was sworn in last night by Mayor Kevin Higgins after the governing body unanimously approved the appointment.

DeMauro was chosen from among three individuals submitted by Lake Como Democratic Chairman Michael Ryan for consideration to the seat — the others being Planning Board Chairman Joseph Cavaluzzi and Planning Board Vice Chairman Eugene Cavanagh Jr.

With DeMauro’s appointment on September 3, Mayor Higgins shifted several council assignments, selecting Councilman Christopher D’Antuono to oversee public works and water/sewer and DeMauro to hold responsibility over the board of education and recreation.

DeMauro is executive director and chief executive officer of L.E.A.D.-Law Enforcement Against Drugs, a statewide collaborative effort by certified law enforcement officers, educators and community leaders to offer programs “on the streets and in the classroom”  to prevent drug abuse, drug-related crime, bullying and violence.

He and his wife, Jennifer, have lived in Lake Como for three years. They have three adult children — Nicholas Jr., Amanda and Alaina.

Carvelli, who stepped down last month from the council, won re-election to the three-year post in 2017.
