OCEAN GROVE, NJ — The classic quilt design and hand-sewing technique of English paper piecing will be demonstrated by professional crafter/quilter Deb Hathaway Hunter on Tuesday, January 14 at Serenity by the Sea, 53 Main Avenue.

During the 1 to 3 p.m. workshop, participants will join Hunter in creating small, colorful designs with simple hexagon-shaped paper templates. When completed, the hand-sewn “hexie” piece can be used as appliques for pillows, pockets and gifts — or serve as a block for a patchwork quilt.

“It’s a great project to do when you’re on the go,” said Hunter, president of the Jersey Shore Modern Quilt Guild, who has been sewing by hand and machine for 50 years.

Both Serenity by the Sea owner Sarah Taylor Izzo and Hunter hope to bring back the joy of methodically stitching by hand, as well as show how “stitch meditation” can be relaxing and relieve stress. In fact, studies show that the rhythm and repetition of stitching create a calming effect that is similar to meditation.

Hexagon paper templates, needle, thread and scissors will be provided. Cost is $35 for participants who bring their own fabric, or $40 with fabric provided. Class size is limited. Call 973-699-1760 to reserve a space.

The event is part of Serenity by the Sea’s continuing ‘It’s All Within the Zen” series, which features a variety of artistic and holistic offerings. For more information on upcoming programs and workshops, visit its Facebook page.
