WASHINGTON, DC — One New Jersey resident is among 35 people in nine states infected with salmonella linked to eggs produced by a farm in Hyde County, N.C., according to an update by the Food & Drug Administration. 

Some 207 millions eggs were voluntarily recalled in April by Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Ind., because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella braenderup, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others who have weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals who become infected can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  

In addition to New Jersey, the eggs were sold in Colorado, Florida, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Of the 35 people affected to date, 11 have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. No other information on the affected New Jerseyan was released.

According to the FDA, the affected eggs are from plant number P-1065 with the Julian date range of 011 through date of 102 printed on either the side portion or the principal side of the carton or package.

These eggs were sold under multiple brand names, including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value (sold at Walmart), Nelms, Publix, Sunshine Farms, and Sunups.

The Hyde County farm which produces 2.3 million eggs a day. The facility includes 3 million laying hens with a USDA inspector on-site daily.

Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are urged to immediately discontinue use of the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact the company at 855-215-5730 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
