BELMAR, NJ — Children in Belmar Elementary School’s prekindergarten class recently received a lesson that, in the end, was as easy as pie.

The group of some 60 preschoolers took a short walking trip down Main Street to Sweet Tease Tearoom and Café, where owner Kate Walters introduced them to the workings of a bakery. It was a hands-on extension of what they’ve been learning in the classroom about grocery stores and restaurants — in particular, bakeries, said prekindergarten teacher Patricia Glab.

Once inside the specialty bakery, they used that knowledge to identify the different workers, as well as the many sweet treats that fill its cases.

Working up quite an appetite from the trip, they sat down in the café’s quaint dining room for a sampling of freshly baked apple, cherry and blueberry pie, served up with hot chocolate. And when it came time for them to choose their favorite slice, apple emerged as the clear winner.
