BELMAR, NJ — Hundreds of vehicles converged on the Belmar beachfront last night in what is being described as a “pop-up car meet” that was organized through social media, according to the Belmar Police Department.
At about 8 p.m. on January 11, vehicles began arriving to the borough and within 20 minutes filled the entire beachfront along Ocean Avenue, according to Belmar police in a Facebook post.
“Extra patrols were called in and assistance from surrounding towns was requested. Numerous summonses were issued for motor vehicle violations, as well as (for violating) the borough noise ordinance,” the post said.
No major incidents occurred during the impromptu event, and all vehicles exited Belmar by about midnight, police said.
Belmar had no prior knowledge that the event would be taking place. Police were able to find information on the event’s organizers through Instagram and plan on monitoring the site for any future events.
While Belmar police did not identify the pop-up meet’s organizer, a group called “Los Goonies/Street Legends” started promoting the event on Friday on its Instagram page, following up with several photos from last night’s event in Belmar. One photo included this post: “A crazy night indeed, great turnout and thank you all that attended. We didn’t expect the turnout to be on the scale that it was. Truly felt like H20, Belmar PD Thank you for being so cool the whole night. It was a mad house of cars that came out, on another subject if anyone has info on the (f---) that keyed cars let us know to direct it to the proper channels. Not cool at all. We still hope you guys had fun.”
