FREEHOLD, NJ — A 17-year-old boy died in a house fire in Neptune Township shortly before midnight yesterday, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
The blaze at 1821 McBride Avenue was reported by a resident of the house at 11:58 p.m. on July 22 --— several hours after the house lost power due to the strong storms that pounded the area earlier in the evening, the office said in a release.
Neptune Township police, firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the call of a possible entrapment in the boy's bedroom. Upon their arrival, two residents of the home were safely evacuated from the home, but a third resident was believed to still be inside the structure.
Police and firefighters made several attempts to search the residence but efforts were hampered by heavy fire. The fire was ultimately extinguished and the teenager’s body was found in his bedroom.
An investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is ongoing, the prosecutor’s office said.
