BELMAR, NJ — Belmar Elementary School’s championship-winning boys soccer team ruled Main Street yesterday.
With dozens of students gathered on the sidewalk in front of the school on November 2, many holding handmade congratulatory signs, two Belmar fire trucks came roaring by with the players perched on top and waving proudly to the crowd. And then they came around one more time, so that the students could get in another round of cheers and chants to accentuate the celebration.
On November 1, the team captured the Monmouth County Athletic League’s tournament title, ending its season undefeated with a 1-0 win over Spring Lake Heights. The victory lifted it to a spotless 13-0 record.
Ever Mendoza, the team’s leading scorer, chalked up the only goal in the final win, while goalie Rory Mather put the brakes on every shot that came his way. "(Mather) was spectacular in the finals, which enabled us to stay in the game and eventually get the game-winning goal," said coach Brian Basaman.
In Belmar’s 3-2 win in the semifinals against Brielle on October 30, Mendoza scored two of three goals as Patrick Woodrow scored the winning goal, which Basaman described as a “great shot from the top of the goal box.”
Congratulations to the entire team, whose roster is below:
Eighth-graders: Chris Greenlow, Gavin Lisko, Brandon Gonzalez, Ethan Miller, Braeden Chek, Christopher Lynch, Rory Mather, William Cruz, Frankie Viterbo, Ever Mendoza and David Cajas.
Remaining players: Patrick Woodrow, Alex Nicolas Barragan, Matt Donovan, Landon Herbert, Michael Juarez Rojas, Matt Hope, Jorge Cruz Cruz, Cameron Kowalcyk and Jonathan Luenges Lopez.
