LAKE COMO/BELMAR, NJ — Irish skies were smiling down on the 47th annual Belmar/Lake Como St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Except for a chilly breeze coming from the Belmar marina, it was a near picture-perfect day for the March 1 parade, which drew thousands of spectators along Main Street, beginning in Lake Como and proceeding through Belmar.
For nearly three hours, they enjoyed the Irish bagpipers and drummers, fire trucks, bands, floats and other attractions that has made the parade a favorite early spring event for nearly five decades.
In addition to street vendors selling their green mementos, downtown businesses came alive with parade specials, especially when it came to Irish fare, sweet treats and of course, the beer and other libations served up at five bars and one brewery along the parade route.
For the Belmar and Lake Como community, it was a day of hometown pride as elected officials, school children and individuals representing a host of community organizations and businesses got a chance to march down their Main Street — to the cheers of friends, neighbors and family.
