CHATHAM, NJ - The Baseball Club of Chatham has introduced a new league this year, the Bambino Buddy-Ball division, which is designed to encourage participation by special needs ballplayers ages 5 to 19.
Registration is now open on the Baseball Club of Chatham website.
Opening Day for the Buddy-Ball baseball program is April 23.
About Buddy Ball
The Bambino Buddy-Ball Division was established by Babe Ruth baseball for players ages 5-19 who are either physically and/or mentally challenged. Buddy Ball allows challenged or special needs athletes to develop confidence and positive self-esteem. It allows them to be part of organized sports and assists with physical fitness as well as their social skills.
Buddy Ball is designed to give everyone a chance to play baseball and have fun. This division makes allowance for a “buddy” to help the player swing a bat, round the bases, catch a ball, etc.
All Buddy Ball games will be 1-hour sessions held 5 p.m. Saturdays at Lum Field. Sessions will include a 30-minute practice, followed by a 30-minute game. The season will conclude June 18.
"Buddies" will primarily consist of high school-aged baseball players and will be coordinated through the Chatham High School Sports Buddies Club. If you are interested in becoming a buddy, please contact Nick Saluzzi at NSaluzzi5@gmail.com
Chatham Baseball is seeking managers, coaches and other volunteers who may be interested in assisting the League in staging the Buddy Ball Division. Please indicate if you are willing to volunteer when registering your child.
Registration fee will be $50 per player to cover the costs of baseball hats, shirts, end of season awards and end of season party.
