Summit's Department of Community Programs is now offering a class in Baseball Skills for children with special needs. Trained Baseball Coaches and Teen Mentors will be offering a baseball skills instructional program for children ages 6+. The classes are small and the coaches will focus on baseball basics such as throwing, catching, hitting and basic rules. The coaches will also focus on teamwork, listening and playing safely. Several children who have taken this class in the past, have then moved on to their local youth baseball program.

The program is a part of the TryCAN collaboration of three communities. Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit have joined forces to provide the most comprehensive program of offerings for children with special needs in the region. Due to this collaboration, there is no residency requirement and scholarship aid may be available. The program has just started but children are still welcome to join. Their participation will be pro rated.

The program is held on Sundays through March 14, 2010. Baseball Skills is held at the Summit Community Center, 100 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ. For information call Summit Community Programs at 908-277-2932 or
