CRANFORD, NJ - The Berkeley Heights 6th grade lacrosse team competed in the Cranford Tournament last Sunday and captured their first season win by defeating the Renegades, 10-2, in the third and last game of the day. This newly formed team also played hard against New Providence and Scotch Plains earlier in the tournament.
"We had a short bench with only 14 players able to make the tournament," said Assistant Coach Mike Chiefa. "All the kids played extremely hard and never gave up even though they were completely gassed."
Brett Peer (3) first hat-trick of the season
Jonah Kim (1)
Jace Wanca (1) first of the season
Jeremy Siksnius (1) first of his career
Kyle Foster (1) first for the season
Tyler Dunn (1) first for the season
Cormac Rouse (2) goals scored with a long pole. Rouse, who plays goalie, got time in the field for the first time this season.
The sixth grade team is led by Head Coach Sean McDonnell and assisted by John Foster, Matt Dunn, Mike Chiefa and Jay Wanca.
Chiefa commented on the tremendous job by defenders Matt Stecher and William Smookler, "both are first year players and really starting to grasp the defensive scheme."
Brandon Dunn, the team's starting defense-man played goalie and impressed his coaches being his first time in goal.
Carter Wahler and Mac Chiefa did a fantastic job on midfield to clear the ball to the offense and locked down the defense from the midfield.
"Will Sottosanti really came alive on offense and provide some great looks and assists to help support the goals scored," said Chiefa.
He added, "Ryan Tomich, one of our first year players, had his best game to date exemplified by much improved stick skills and playing a major role in our excellent defense. Ryan has really come a long way so far."
The coaches were extremely proud of the level of play from the boys as they know this team will be a force to be reckoned with as they continue to progress and get better as team.
