BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Berkeley Heights Community Pool at the YMCA (BHCP) "Breakers" swim team held its final swim meet on Wednesday night at home, beginning with a team picture and a celebration of its graduating seniors.
Even after moving up a division in the North New Jersey Summer Swim League this year, the BHCP Breakers had a 7-1 record this season with a team of swimmers ages 7-18. In addition to the competitive team, BHCP also hosted a "pre-team" of swimmers who practiced but did not compete.
The graduating seniors were Jimmy Pitingolo, Sarah Polizzi, and Duytam Vu. Each senior has been on the BHCP swim team since elementary school, and each senior also earned a 4-year gold varsity letter on the Governor Livingston High School (GLHS) swim team. Pitingolo, Polizzi and Vu served as team captains of the GLHS swim team in their senior year. Pitingolo and Polizzi have been assistant coaches of the BHCP Breakers for the past two seasons.
The night ended not only with a victory for the team (and a celebratory dip in the pool), but also the annual parent relay against the coaches. BHCP swimmers cheered on their parents as they swam a freestyle relay against the coaches' medley relay. Despite impressive efforts, the coaches won, with Polizzi beating her father in the anchor leg.
On Monday, the team will compete at the Divisional championships, and then the fastest 16 swimmers in each event across the League (comprised of four divisions) will compete at the Meet of Champions at the New Providence Community Pool on Thursday July 26.
