BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Berkeley Heights Fire Department reponsded to a reported smoke condition at a home on Beechwood Lane in Free Acres Monday evening at 7:52 p.m.
When Engine-4 arrived to Beechwood Lane, a moderate smoke condition was present inside and outside the home. All of the occupants had evacuated the home.
"The fire was located in the crawl space under the home in a HVAC unit," said Deputy Chief Jim Hopkins. "Crews extinguished the fire which was already extending into a bedroom closet on the first floor."
The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad responded and provided water and wet towels for the Firefighters. "In weather like we had yesterday, heat stress is a danger to the Firefighters that are in all that gear," said Hopkins.
Chatham Twp Ladder and a New Providence Engine responded to the scene. Fanwood Ladder and an Engine from Stirling covered the Township while crews were committed on Beechwood.
