BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – The township is listed as the 61st  safest city in America in a report generated by SafeWise.com, “your source for home security and safety advice,” according to its website.

The group issued its list of the 100 Safest Cities in America for 2017 on Monday, Aug. 14, and it may surprise many who look at the list the number of New Jersey communities that made the list.

Berkeley Heights, with a population of 13,602, had a rate of 00 per 1,000 people for violent crimes and of 4.30 per 1,000 people for property crimes.

This is the township’s first appearance on the list. “Your police force has done a fantastic job keeping the community safe. While the entire Berkeley Heights Police Department watches over the city, Lieutenant Ed Ammerlaan and Sergeant Jason Massimino head the Community Policing Unit, which focuses on building relationships between officers and residents,” reported the site.

Nearby towns that made it onto the list include Bernards Township, #21, Chatham Township, #42, Warren Township, #45, Madison, #64 and New Providence #67, but those aren’t the only New Jersey towns that made the 100 Safest Cities in America list.

In May, after analyzing FBI crime statistics, SafeWise issued its report on the 50 safest cities in New Jersey. In May, Washington Township, Morris County was named the safest city in New Jersey, River Vale was number two and Bernards Township came in third, while Berkeley Heights was 16th.

The country-wide ranking was made by reviewing the FBI Crime Report from 2015 and population data for communities in each state. In New Jersey, all communities with less than 10,000 residents were eliminated, as were those that did not submit a complete crime report to the FBI, according to the website.

Violent crimes, such as aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery and property crimes, burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft were compared, and calculated as events per 1,000 people in each city.

The statistics from all 50 states were then compared and the final ranking complied and published. Check out the complete list of the 100 Safest Cities in America for 2017.

I can enjoy the same movies over and over like it were the first time to see them.  My kids roll their eyes at this.  Well, many unimaginable things happen as you become a certain age, and you tend to learn to accept those things graciously as gift.   But I remember the movie “The Blind Side.”  Until I saw that movie, I didn’t know homeless children ...

What's Hot and What's Not

Under-enroll?  What application materials were useful to them?  Which were redundant or time ...
