WILTON, CT - On Sunday, Feb. 18 the Berkeley Heights PAL Travel Wrestling team braved the elements and some elite competition at the Warrior Classic held in the legendary Wilton Fieldhouse in Wilton, CT. This tourney featured wrestling clubs from five states, including perennial New York powerhouses “Blue Wave” and “Iowa Style.”

In the 9-year old and under morning session, Berkeley Heights had two wrestlers win all of their matches en route to first place.  Third grader Christian Sabatino picked up his first career Gold Medal while second grader Nate Faxon won his third tourney of the season. Mac Chiefa navigated a “meat grinder” of a bracket en route to a 3rd place finish, Berkeley Heights also received tough performances from Sean Seccamanie and Elias Verardi.

The 10-year old and older wrestlers were equally successful in the afternoon session. Eighth Graders Marcello Laygo and James Snyder both brought home the Gold for Berkeley Heights. Laygo dominated each of his matches from start to finish --  it was definitely a breakout weekend for this talented grappler. Snyder trailed late in his finals match before pulling out the victory with a 3rd period pin. Jason Rosenberg, Greg Friedenberg and Ben Faxon all won Silver Medals in extremely tough weight classes. Bronze medalists included Jake Quandt, Ryan Harder,  and Harrison Kelly.  Jack Sergio and Sean Dyer both wrestled extremely well in quite possibly the two toughest weight classes in the tourney, both Jack and Sean competed against multiple All State wrestlers.

The Berkeley Heights PAL wrestling team will be home (Governor Livingston) on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a quad meet against Long Valley, Randolph and Madison. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. All Berkeley Heights community members are encouraged to come by GL to watch these tough men of the mat.
