The Berkeley Heights Police Department will host its first annual Police Youth Academy from July 23-27 for grades 9-12 and July 30-Aug. 3 for boys and girls grades 6-8.

The Police Youth Academy will provide boys and girls an inside look at local law enforcement. It will build a lasting partnership between our Police Department, the Youth, and the Community We Serve. The Youth Academy will create a nucleus of well-informed greater insight into practices and services of the Berkeley Heights Police, FBI, Secret Service, S.W.A.T., NJ State Police and others. Teaching pride, respect, responsibility, self-discipline, teamwork, and increasing one's self-esteem are important objectives.

Topics covered will include: patrol functions, self-defense, drill and ceremony, crime scene processing, traffic laws and a S.W.A.T. Team demonstration. Activities also will include light calesthenics, recreational team-building and basic police procedures.

Police Youth Academy applications can be picked up at Berkeley Heights Police Headquarters, located at 29 Park Avenue. For additional information, contact Patrolman Jason Massimino at 908-464-1111.
