BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Colleagues and many community volunteers lined up for a socially safe Honk Parade on Friday -- led by the police and fire department to show Berkeley Heights Recreation Director Tom Barton some love.

Today marked Barton's last day at the recreation office before his retirement officially begins on May 31, 2020.

Colleagues, volunteers, and residents alike have all had nothing but positive messages for Tom Barton as he embarks on his new chapter with his wife Joanne to enjoy their retirement in North Carolina.

"With his pleasant demeanor and desire to go the extra mile for the residents of Berkeley Heights, Tom Barton, also known as the Director of Fun, will be sorely missed by both residents and his co-workers when he retires as Recreation Director effective May 31, 2020," said Mayor Angie Devanney in a proclamation that was read at Tuesday's council meeting.

Due to the pandemic, many regular recreation programs have been canceled including the Summer Concert series, Teen Scene Camp and their entire calendar of spring programming. Stay-tuned as the Recreation Department navigates through the safety regulations and programming to be offered this summer.
