Berkeley Heights YMCA Joins Statewide Fitness Initiative Via Jan. 10 Open House Event

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – While nearly everyone has a New Year’s resolution, statistics indicate that less than a quarter of these resolutions are kept.  The Summit Area YMCA will be helping residents buck that trend by hosting an Open House event January 10 designed to encourage individuals and families to make their resolutions a reality.

The Berkeley Heights YCMA Open House from 7:30 a.m. through 1 p.m. will feature tours, cycling, hatha yoga, Zumba, youth sports and more..

Creating personal change takes effort, and support. , YMCAs across the state have come together for the first time and agreed to hold an Open House event at their local facilities on January 10.

“Everyone resolves to improve or make a change,” says Paul Kieltyka, Summit Area YMCA President and CEO. “We all say, 'Someday, I’ll get on a regular workout routine.’  ‘Someday, I’ll play sports again.’  ‘Someday, I’ll have more time to spend with my kids.’  Our message is: why wait?  Local YMCAs are a place where you can do this today."

Kieltyka added, "We’re a health and wellness and community organization that supports individuals and families to reach their goals.  This year, we’re taking things even further with a free, state-wide event hosted by dozens of YMCAs to promote healthy change at their individual locations.  We welcome all.”

Because personal change can be difficult, the Summit YMCA has noted some important steps to help maintain a healthy fitness routine:

Write it Down

  • Write down exactly what you want to accomplish.
  • Don’t hide your goals in your desk drawer, rather post them in a prominent place where you’ll frequently view them.
  • Keep a journal of your progress, so you can measure yourself and keep yourself accountable.

Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable

  • Get outside your comfort zone: If change were easy, more people succeed.
  • Accept that change is difficult. Embrace the challenge.

Become Active

  • Schedule time each day for you and or your family to engage in physical activity.
  • Walk, swim, bike on your own or take an exercise class.
  • Classes offer a social aspect, which increases likelihood for continued exercise.
  • Whether or not your goals are fitness-related, eating properly and being physically engaged is important to a healthy lifestyle.

Don’t Do it Alone

  • Difficult changes can become almost impossible when you bear the weight alone.
  • It’s important to enlist support.  A support system not only holds you accountable, it makes things more fun.
  • Let others help you, and you’ll not only be more likely to accomplish your goals, you’ll foster stronger relationships in your life.

The Summit Area YMCA is nonprofit, and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.  To learn more,` visit

And Over Here is the Dining Hall 2

My very first job in admissions was while I was still an undergraduate myself as a tour guide.  Very early on they indoctrinated us with some tricks of the trade.  It’s a dining hall, not a cafeteria.  A residence hall, not a dorm.  If you have to divulge some negative bit of information, sandwich it between two positives.  There were instructions for glossing over ...
