The Highlanders hosted the Linden Tigers in the Preliminary round of the Union County Tournament. Having won 3-0 against the same opponents on Thursday, GL was full of confidence. That confidence was short lived however as Linden dominated the early play and scored twice in the first 15 minutes.

The Highlanders were struggling to find any rhythm but things started to click when junior Zach Zacieracha's perfectly placed header made it 1-2. The goal seemed to jump start GL and 10 minutes later junior Justin Ladzinski equalized to make it 2-2. With halftime approaching another junior, Ben Grimes, fired into the top corner to make it 3-2.

The second half was much more straightforward for the Highlanders, sophomore Rafe Barnum quickly made it 4-2 with a fine shot into the roof of the net and then Alessio Marisi scored a few minutes later. Frustration started to build for the Linden players and two were shown red cards for fouls and arguing with the referee. With the game 11 vs 9 for the last few minutes what started out as a real battle became a routine win for GL.

The Highlanders Come Up Short Against Roselle in UCT First Round

The Highlanders came up short in their back and forth battle against the Rams of Abraham Clark High School on Tuesday in the first round of the UCT in Roselle. Both teams traded chances in this evenly matched game. The game remained scoreless at halftime after sophomore Ethan Proper produced a close scoring opportunity and Roselle hit the post.

In the second half, Roselle created more chances and senior goalie Andre Perez-Santalla made a number of good saves to keep things all square. With about ten minutes on the clock, junior Thomas Candoloro's shot was cleared off the line, robbing GL of a go ahead goal. With moments of regulation to play, Roselle scored on a well-executed counter-attack when Carlos Vergara sent a through ball to Brayan Ramirez who cashed in a shot to take the lead. In the dying seconds, GL pushed everyone forward, but couldn't find a late equalizer.

Up next, Gov. Livingston will host their Senior Night game on Thursday against  Oratory Prep at Snyder Field at 7 p.m.
