Cross Country: Gov. Livingston Sophomore Girls Win Class Championship; Frosh Caroline Mondelli Places First at Thompson Park Class Meet

JAMESBURG, NJ - The Governor Livingston (GL) Highlanders Girls and Boys Cross Country teams turned up the heat on their competition at the Thompson Park Class Meet on Saturday, September 23 in Jamesburg.

Runners in this meet were grouped according to class year and gender, unlike a meet with varsity, junior varsity, and freshman races for the girls and boys teams.  All participating sophomores, juniors, and seniors ran a distance of 5,000 meters, while all freshmen ran a distance of 2.5 miles.

With four runners representing the Highlanders, GL’s sophomore girls scorched the field, winning the sophomore girls class championship. Victoria Vanriele led the Highlanders, placing second out of 153 runners in a time of 19:53.6.  Other top ten finishers included Mackenzie Lloyd, who placed sixth with a time of 20:44.0, and Rachel Mustacchi, who placed 9th with a time of 21:14.3.  Valerie Diamond rounded out the winning sophomore squad in a time of 23:59.28.

In other girls races of the day, junior Katelyn Quinn was the first for the Highlanders to cross the finish line with a time of 21:58.9, followed by junior Evelyn Doskoch with a time of 22:20.5. Senior Pascal Youssef  finished in 23:12.8. 

Freshman Caroline Mondelli finished first out of 140 runners in the freshman girls race with a time of 15:20.7, a time that was approximately 50 seconds faster than the second place finisher. 

The Highlander boys also blazed in their races.  GL’s top finisher of the day was Alex Aranas, who placed third among the sophomore boys with a time of 17:40.7. 

Senior Logan Calichman, who placed 19th overall, clocked in at 18:03.2 and senior Michael Zacieracha finished 21st in 18:20.11.  

Lorenzo Pagdanganan finished 11th out of 110 in the junior boys race with a time of 18:18.60.  

Matthew Saia crossed the finished line first among the nine freshman Highlander boys, with a time of 15:39.2 placing 22nd.

Highlanders are back in action at a quad meet on Tuesday, September 26 at 4 p.m. at Warinanco Park in Roselle, when the Highlanders take on teams from Elizabeth, Hillside, and Scotch Plains.
