Dear Susan: What are the makeup trends this spring?
It’s all about color. Make up artists have been obsessed with utilizing shades like turquoise and other cool tones to really bring out that ocean and island mood. Turquoise eyeliner or soft blue eyeshadows can really add life to your look, especially if you have green or blue eyes, this is definitely your time to shine and achieve that coveted mermaid glam! If you really want to go all out, glitter is making a comeback! Applying glitter to the center of the lid can take your look to the next level for any day date or a fun night out.
As always, using reds as a pop of color is always a classy and year-round staple. Since it’s spring, opt for brighter shades, so anything candy apple red or similar will do the trick! Easily dress up any outfit with a bold red lip or even red nail polish to make a statement. Lip colors with gloss or shine are very in this year, so try those out over your usual matte shades when you shop!
Spring also means more sun - so more glow! Highlighters are a great way to bring attention to the apples of your cheeks to pair with your contour, or even to compliment your lip color by putting just a small amount of product on the bottom of your cupid’s bow. Instead of more muted highlighter products, this spring use more gold and shimmery shades to give you an amazing sun-kissed glow!
Skin Deep’s Pick: Babor’s foundation is a must! This product should be used everyday to protect your skin. Layering is the key with fluid, moisturizer, and then foundation. Our foundation comes in three categories from mattefying, anti-aging, and a serum treatment based foundation. By layering, this will help protect against the sun and give a natural SPF of 10.
Dear Susan: We're headed to a tropical island for vacation this spring break and I want to pick a good sunscreen but am overwhelmed with all the choices. What do you recommend?
Keeping healthy, beautiful skin always leads back to the conversation of sunscreen, especially with the up-coming spring and summer seasons. And with all of the contradictory information about sunscreen out there, it’s very easy to be confused and misled, so be careful! Scientists have identified multiple risk factors of melanoma, but the causes and the best forms of prevention are still experimental. Sunscreens are usually marketed as offering “broad spectrum” protection, but with varying skin types or even with something as simple as family history, how effective these products are against harmful UVA rays might still not be enough. To start providing more powerful sunscreen products, manufacturers will have to utilize ingredients that are yet to be FDA approved. Because sunscreen is applied to multiple parts of the body for several uses and has the potential of resulting in various side effects such as irritation or allergic reactions, the FDA approval process for new ingredients might be slow or even undesirable just to avoid risks.
Skin Deep’s Pick: We recommend Coola. Coola sunscreen incorporates certified organic ingredients such as cucumber and algae, as well as strawberry extracts and red raspberry seed oil. Our favorite is their classic unscented spray for easy, full coverage and application. We do recommend an SPF of 30 for face and body.
Dear Susan: I'm finding that I'm on edge a lot and just feel like i need a break. I can't take off from work, but would love a little reprieve. Help!
When it comes to stress management, massage is the key! While massage is often viewed as a luxury or temporary stress relief, it really should be a regular part of our routine to maintain a healthy body. A massage once a week has multiple benefits, such as preventing injury, relieving tension or pain, allowing better blood flow just to name a few.
Constant stress or even simple movements in our day such as having a desk job or bad posture can cause so much discomfort and pain that can be better managed with consistent massage. Especially after winter, where the weather and the cold can subtlely add more tension and tightness in our muscles, massage is a integral part of ensuring the body’s longevity and the endurance of its mechanics.
Skin Deep’s Pick: All of Skin Deep’s Massage Therapists are very seasoned and hand-picked by the owner, Susan Barbaglia. Each have at least five to thirty years of experience and extensive training.
