The American Spinal Injury Association, ASIA, is the premier North America Association in the field of spinal cord care injury and research and is holding their Annual Scientific Conference in Albuquerque, NM, this weekend. The conference is for the exchange of new ideas, research trends and advances in spinal cord injury management and this year Dr. Donald DeFabio of Berkeley Heights was invited to present.

2017 marks the inaugural year of the Health and Wellness Track at the conference which prompted Dr. DeFabio, a Doctor of Chiropractic to present at this medical conference. The invitation was extended by Isa McCLure, PT, MAPT, who is the chair of ASIA’s Rehabilitation Standards, Health and Wellness Committee.

“Being invited to present at ASIA’s Annual scientific conference is a honor” said DeFabio, “It is exciting to be a part of an interdisciplinary approach in the management of spinal cord injured patients and athletes.” DeFabio was the medical coordinator for the USA Paralympic wheelchair fencing team from 2000 to 2012 and is a Senior Classifier for the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation in wheelchair fencing. We have been interested in bringing a chiropractic doctor to speak for several years,” said McClure, “but we were unsure on who was the appropriate DC to speak.  Dr. DeFabio was introduced to me by a colleague and once I met him, I knew we ‘had our man.’ His expertise in both able bodied and wheelchair sports along with his academic credentials, makes him a perfect fit for our program.”

ASIA’s  Scientific Conference is  essential to their Mission of promoting establishing standards of excellence for the health care of individuals with spinal cord injury throughout life. This includes fostering research, education of healthcare professionals and families, spinal injury prevention and communication among allied healthcare providers and consumers.

Dr. DeFabio is in private practice as the owner of DeFabio Spine and Sports Rehab in Berkeley Heights NJ. His office provides natural and alternative healthcare options including acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition and corrective exercises.
