BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Governor Livingston fencing faced tough competition this week against Montclair and Livingston. 
Boys, Girls Fall to Montclair
Boys lost 14-13 to Montclair at home on Tuesday in a tense faceoff that came down to the final bout, when freshman epee Blake Januzzi put up a good fight in one of his first high school bouts. Junior sabre Justin Lewis, just named team captain, was undefeated in three bouts. The sabre squad was 6-3. Foils, led by senior Tyler Man, were 5-4. Epees, led by senior Erick Lim, were 2-7. Freshman epee Christopher Zheng won his first bout for GL. 
Lady Highlanders lost 20-7 against Montclair, a team that finished No. 10 in New Jersey last season. Junior sabre Heather Januzzi, just named team captain, went 1-2, as did junior sabre Sarah Comerford. The sabre squad went 4-5, foils 0-9, and epees 2-7.

Girls Pick Up Win, Boys Suffer Loss to Livingston
Lady Highlanders turned it around in the next meet against Livingston, winning 16-11. Epees led the way 7-2 under squad leader and junior Lily Walsh, who was undefeated in two bouts. Senior epee Colee Zheng also was undefeated in two bouts. Epees Victoria Beke, a sophomore, and Ritika Sinha-Chaudhuri, freshman, each won a bout. Sabres went 5-4. Foils, led by senior squad leader Laura Fan, went 4-5. Junior foil Madison Fong won both her bouts and Gia LaSalle, also a junior, won her bout.
Boys lost 16-11 to Livingston, a team that finished No. 9 in New Jersey last season. The sabre squad finished positive 5-4, with senior Nicholas Kwan winning all three of his bouts. Tyler Man also won all three of his bouts, and the foil squad went 3-6. Epees also were 3-6, with Erick Lim, senior Sam Oliveira, and Blake Januzzi each winning a bout.   
Next up, GL faces more of NJ’s top competitors -- Columbia on Jan. 4, Bernards on Jan. 6, and Millburn on Jan. 9.
