BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J. – It’s time again for the annual Mt. Carmel Feast, a four-day festival full of food, music, games, rides, fireworks, and other family fun, located at Mt. Carmel Field in Berkeley Heights.
The fairgrounds will be open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, July 13 through Monday, July 16. Those four nights will include concerts, games, and traditional Italian food.
On Sunday night, July 15, the festival will also feature “mini” family-friendly fireworks starting at 9:30 p.m.
Monday morning, Feast Day, will bring the traditional 8 a.m. processional parade through town with the Blessed Mother statue. A short mass will be held at Little Flower Church afterward, followed by a free picnic at Peppertown Park on Plainfield Avenue.
That night, the festival will include its fireworks extravaganza. Handicap parking and shuttle buses will be available nearby, but there will be no parking on the fairgrounds. For more information see the websites listed below.
The event takes place at Mt. Carmel Field, 56 River Road, Berkeley Heights.
The admission cost for the first three nights of the event is free.
For fireworks extravaganza on Monday, July 16, tickets are $15 for adults and for children 6 and over. Children 5 and under are free.
Unlimited wristbands for the rides will be $25 per night and will be available July 13-15. Visitors can also buy individual ride tickets, cash only, for all four nights.
Traditionally, the feast is celebrated on July 16, when the Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a Carmelite monk, on July 16, 1251. Mt. Carmel is a mountain in Israel near where Christ lived as a child. An order of monks worshipped there, and on July 16, Mary is said to have given one of them the Carmelite habit – the Brown Scapular.
