BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ– At the Summit Area YMCA, 7th Graders in our service area pay absolutely nothing for an annual membership thanks to the generous support of YMCA Annual Giving donors and grant support from local corporations and foundations.

7th Grade is a pivotal and transitional year for many teens. At the Summit Area YMCA, we understand this and are committed to supporting and encouraging youth to make good decisions and form healthy habits leading to a healthy lifestyle. The 7th Grade Membership program provides opportunities for fitness and sports, as well as an opportunity to socialize with peers in a safe, supervised, and conveniently located environment.

“I’ve noticed instead of going home and playing video games, I come here. I’ve noticed I’ve gotten stronger and I run longer which I really like. I would describe the Seventh Grade Membership Program as a fun thing to do after school. If it weren’t for the Y, I’d probably be doing something that would get me in trouble, but with the Y here, I can just come and work out and have fun. Even on the weekends if I’m bored, I’ll come here because it’s fun and safe. “  -- Tyler, Berkeley Heights YMCA Member

“When I come here I get a really good feeling because I know I’m doing something that’s good for my body and it’s something that I should be doing a couple times a week. I would definitely not be that healthy of a person in general. I come here and do physical activity instead of going home and sitting on the couch, eating junk food, doing whatever. It’s been a really good experience for me. “   --- Alex, a Summit Area YMCA Member

The 7th Grade Initiative is available to rising and current 7th graders who reside within Summit, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Millburn, Springfield, Short Hills, Gillette, and Stirling. The annual membership opened for the 2018-2019 school year on June 18, 2018 at the Summit YMCA, located at 67 Maple Street but students can sign up anytime throughout the year. At the Berkeley Heights YMCA, located at 550 Springfield Avenue, the membership begins on September 15, 2018. 7th Graders can sign up at the branch of their choice.

Signing up is simple, all students need is their parent/guardian and a copy of their school ID or report card. Students will be asked to sign a code of conduct, fill out some paperwork, and sign up for the required fitness equipment demonstrations that focus on safety and proper technique.  Students will receive a temporary access card until they complete all the required demos. Demos must be scheduled in advance. Once all required demos are completed, 7th graders will have access to the Y fitness center and applicable programming.
