UNION, NJ - Freshman Matt Darata’s three goal effort led the GL hockey squad to a 3-2 come from behind victory when it faced Rumson-Fair Haven on Saturday’s night cap. Darata scored two of his three goals in the third period to propel the Highlanders over favorited RHF.
Five minutes after an RFH rebound score, Darata scored from assists by Ryan Paik and Mat Katz to tie the score at one. In the second period, right before the period ended, Rumson-Fair Haven scored to take a 2-1 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Darata added his second of the game early in the third, when passes from Max Mele and Ryan Erickson led to a powerplay goal to even the score at two apiece. With just under two minutes to play, RFH made a costly mistake that sent a defender to the penalty box, giving GL the powerplay for the remainder of the game.
Darata capped off his phenomenal evening, scoring the game winning goal with 22 seconds to play. GL held on to upset the highly favored Rumson-Fair Haven.
Darata’s three goals bring his season tally up to 6 on the season. Goalie Nick Papa had another impressive effort, saving 31 of 33 shots on goal.
GL improves to 6-7 on the year, but still sits at 1-7 in conference. The Highlanders will look to improve its record to .500 and avenge an earlier 3-2 loss when it travels to Montclair to face off with MKA on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
