BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Gov. Livingston girls basketball team defeated Plainfield, 63-46, Tuesday night.

The Highlanders stayed on top throughout the entire game by handling the ball with skill and composure. Senior Lindsay Distaso contributed 20 points, junior Lindsay Gerrato scored 15 points and junior Lara Romano chipped in 13, helping GL come out on top.

GL opened with a lead and maintained their high momentum throughout the entire first half. Defensive pressure landed the ball in the Highlander’s hands, causing turnovers. Gov. Livingston head coach Vin Gulbin said, “We pressured them initially with some full and half court traps which caused some turnovers and easy baskets to take an opening lead.”

The momentum didn’t stop in the second half despite Plainfield’s three-pointers and quick lay ups. Gerrato opened up the third quarter with a three pointer putting the Highlanders in the lead 37-22. With help from Romano and Distaso, GL was up 46-35 by the end of the 3rd.

“We also ran our zone set plays very well along with some fast break lay-ups in transition,” said Gulbin.

GL countered Plainfield’s quick offensive plays with intense defensive pressure by Amanda Bostwick and Rachel Siegel in the fourth quarter. Gulbin said, “Although Amanda Bostwick didn’t have her normal offensive game, she contributed defensively.” The tactful defensive plays and fast breaks continued into the fourth quarter where GL scored 17 points, finishing with a 63-46 win.

Next, the Highlanders will take on Scotch Plains-Fanwood at home Wednesday Feb 10 with a 7 p.m. tip off.
