BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Governor Livingston Highlanders defeated the Cardinals of Plainfield 52-19 Thursday, January 23rd in Berkeley Heights. Senior guard Paige Phillps netted a game high four three-pointers to lead the scoring column with 12 points.
Plainfield came into the game with wins in its last three games, however, its winning streak would quickly meet its match, as Coach Chris Eckert had his team ready to go right from the start.
Governor Livingston started out with multiple stops on the defensive end, leading to run outs and easy buckets for Phillips, and fellow senior guard Skylar Dowling. Senior wing Shannon Polimeni was able to get to the line numerous times, converting on two attempts, scoring four points in total.
At 15-4 at the end of the first quarter, Eckert had all underclassmen in with his three seniors on the bench. The underclassmen performed the 2-2-1 press to perfection, creating countless turnovers.
The motion offense on the other side of the ball led to easy baskets underneath due to precision passing by sophomore guard Allie Post, who also contributed with 5 points.
After the halftime break with a 35-6 lead, Governor Livingston went into cruise control, allowing Eckert to empty the rest of his bench to get some much needed experience for later on in the season.
Besides Phillips, no other players for the Highlanders reached double figures, however, every player who checked into the game recorded at least one point in the team win.
Governor Livingston will take on the Vikings of Union Catholic (9-2) on the road in which will be a great test for the scorching hot Highlanders.
