BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ— The Gov. Livingston Girls Varsity Basketball Team came out triumphant over the North Plainfield Canucks on Friday at home, 48-28.

After an early offensive struggle, the GL squad took over the game, sinking shots and executing crucial plays.

Gov. Livingston’s slow start heated up about halfway through the first after senior Lauren Soranno sunk a 3-pointer. Within the last few minutes of the quarter, the Highlanders went on a 14-0 run to put GL up 19-7.

A strong defense propelled by Lindsay DiStaso ’16 prevented the Canucks from taking over GL territory in the second quarter. The Highlanders let up a mere 3 points in the second, while raking in 10 points on offense, increasing their lead to 29-10 by halftime.

The second half marked a period of strong offensive and defensive efforts by the whole GL squad. Junior Lindsay Gerrato controlled the boards and helped propel the Highlanders to a win. By the end of the fourth quarter, Gov. Livingston came out on top, 48-28.

Head Coach Vin Gulbin was proud of the cohesive efforts of his players as well as the offensive aspect of the game.

“We shot the ball, we were two for three for 3-pointers, and we increased our free-throw percentage to about 65 percent. We executed our plays and did a great job today,” Gulbin said, “Our turnovers were low as opposed to previous games and that was the difference in the game. The goal is to translate this play into other games.”

Up next, GL plays against Plainfield with a 6 p.m. tip off on Saturday and will face Cranford on Tuesday, Jan. 21 in Cranford at 4 p.m.

Gov. Livingston Box Score: Amanda Bostwick: 6 points; Lauren Soranno: 6 points; Lindsay DiStaso: 9 points; Lindsay Gerrato: 15 points; Lara Romano: 5 points; Julia Coyle: 7 points
