BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ- The Highlanders defeated Whippany Park 8-3 on a cold April afternoon. The Highlanders held a comfortable lead throughout the game.
Valerie Diamond opened the scoring for GL. She raced past the defenders and beat the goalie a little over five minutes into the first half. GL would double the lead only 20 seconds later when Elena Gerrato scored on a nice inside move to beat the defender for a clean shot into the net. The Highlanders continued to pressure during the first half. Diamond scored again before Whippany Park got on the board, but Mia Maguire buried one after circling the net to regain a three goal lead for GL. The Highlanders kept pushing into the final minute of the half. Maguire potted another goal with 48 seconds remaining, and Gerrato struck again with 14 seconds left on the clock. GL led 6-1 at half.
The Highlanders weren't as dominant in the second half. Gerrato scored her third goal of the game on a long range shot, but Whippany Park retaliated with two goals of their own. Skylar Dowling iced the game for GL with goal with 7:15 left in the game. GL would hold on for the 8- 3 victory.
After the game head coach Chloe Griffin praised her team. "They played really well. They played together. They communicated. I'd have liked things to be a little cleaner, but they did a really good job moving the offense and taking advantage of the opportunities we were given."
With the three goal performance, Gerrato is now six goals away from the 100 goal milestone.
