BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - On Monday, the Governor Livingston girls lacrosse team fell to the Jefferson Falcons, 15-10. With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 6-7.
Elena Gerrato’s seven goals and one assist led the Highlanders while Jenna Attanasio, Madison Lopes, and Valeria Diamond chipped in with one goal apiece. Riley Jankowski and Skylar Dowling each recorded two assists.
The Highlanders were playing without their top scorer, Lindsay Gerrato, and the team certainly missed her.
“Even though we lost, the girls played a good game and fought to the end which I like,” Governor Livingston head coach Chloe Griffin said. “But at the same time, we made a lot of silly mistakes such as not managing the clock well and passing the ball instead of taking shots. We did a lot of the little things that add up.”
The Falcons jumped on the Highlanders early in scoring five goals through the game’s first 15 minutes. The Highlanders would trade scores with the Falcons for the remainder of the half and trailed 8-7 going into the half.
The Falcons once again got a quick start scoring-wise to open the second half and extended their lead to 10-7 with just over 18 minutes remaining.
But the Highlanders wouldn’t go away and went on a 2-0 run to pull to within one with under 13 minutes left in the game.
The two teams would trade goals until about the five-minute mark when the Falcons had had enough and closed the game on a 4-0 run.
“You have to give Jefferson a ton of credit,” Griffin said. “They’re a very good team. They’re fast, quick, and have an amazing midfield transition game. With them, there’s always somebody open at midfield or in front of the goal.”
On Thursday,Gov. Livingston travels to Mount Saint Dominic in a must win match-up to qualify for the NJSIAA sectional tournament. . .
