Glenside Road Continues to be Closed as PSE&G Works to Stop Gas Leak

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Work continues today to repair a gas leak at the intersection of Mountain Avenue, Glenside Road and South Street, said Berkeley Heights Deputy Fire Chief Jim Hopkins. Initial reports that there were evacuations were incorrect.

As of about noon, PSE&G was working on repairing a valve box on Mountainside at Glenside, and "the problem seems to be isolated," which has "Glenside shut right now for a short distance," Hopkins said.

Hopkins said the New Providence and Berkeley Heights Fire departments have been responding to reports of gas leaks in that area, with the first response being on Dec. 30. Since that time Berkeley Heights has responded to the area eight times.

Today, "We metered 16 homes and the storm sewers, and readings have decreased since last night." In particular, the readings by Roland Road are significantly lower than they were on Jan. 3."

Gas company personnel told Hopkins, "What we see in the line today is residual gas from last night's repairs," he said. PSE&G "worked all night fixing several breaks in the line going up Glenside Road."

The New Providence Police Department issued the following statement this morning:

“On January 9, 2018 at approximately 3 PM, New Providence and Berkeley Heights Fire Departments responded to the area of Glenside Road and Mountain for a smell of natural gas.  PSE&G responded and repaired the gas main in that area.

On January 10, 2018 New Providence and Berkeley Heights Fire Departments responded back to the same area for a smell of natural gas.  Glenside Road is currently closed and PSE&G is on scene making repairs for a separate issue, a valve repair.”

HazMat teams from Nokia- Bell Labs facility at the corner and the Union County HazMat teams are on site, as well as both the New Providence and Berkeley Heights Fire Departments. The Nokia-Bell Labs HazMat team monitored the storm sewers into their building and found no gas in them, Hopkins said.

Hopkins added that no evacuations were necessary Wednesday morning, Jan. 10. Earlier this morning reports from BNN (Breaking News Network) indicated "command (was) working on evacuations," because of the discovery of gas in multiple storm drains in the area.

This story will continue to be updated when and if more information is available.
